Idea: Someone Once Told Me

By on June 11, 2010

SomeoneOnceToldMe.com is hugely popular.  The idea behind the site is that every day a new black and white photo is posted.  Each picture is of a person holding a sheet of paper on which they have written something they have be told that has impacted them in some way.  Here’s a description from the site…

We are all shaped by the things that someone once told us. The words we hear impact on us, whether we want them to or not, and it’s undeniable that they have a power.

Someone Once Told Me is essentially a means for me to practise my photography and to give me something to do on my days off as I wander around London, which always feels full of possibilities.

But SOTM is also an attempt to gather and chronicle some of the things that people have heard in their lives, the messages and expressions that have stuck in people’s head, for reasons both obvious and odd.

The description while accurate doesn’t do the site justice.  There’s just something very compelling about the combination of the photos and the quotes each person displays.

This might be a great idea for a series.  You could have photos of people that have gone through some big things and they each could be holding up a card with their favorite verse on it.  Or, you could have people that have been delivered from certain addictions/sins and have them hold up cards with their struggles on it.

A series based loosely on one of these ideas with a corresponding microsite where people could submit their own photos could be very compelling.

What do you think?  How could you use this idea to create a unique series?
