Kindle for Tablets…and iPads
As stated here, we predict that the Kindle (reader) is about to die a slow, painful death. Now, it’s fate is even a little more certain with the announcement of the forthcoming Kindle for Tablets. Amazon is now touting this software and we commend them and their strategy. Basically, Amazon wants you to read your Kindle titles from every place imaginable. They’ve got the kindle readers, the Kindle for PC software, the Kindle for Mac software, the Kindle for iPhone app, and the Kindle for Blackberry app.
The good news coming out of the Amazon camp is that the new Kindle for Tablets app will support the iPad. It will also be a lot more than just a port of the iPhone app. It’s supposedly going to take advantage for a lot of features of tablets and the iPad. For instance, we know that it will have color! We also know that it will allow you to flip pages with a touch gesture.
This announcement is particularly great news for Kindle owners that plan on getting an iPad because it allows you to, in effect, migrate your existing kindle library over to your shiny new iPad without losing the considerable investment that you made there. Of course, this is all assuming that Apple allows the new kindle app to make it’s way on to the iPads. We suspect that there might be a little battle over this in the future considering how things have chilled between Apple and Amazon as of late. Who knows?
We are thankful that Amazon made this move, however. To some it might seem short-sighted on their part but the truth is that how you read the content isn’t really all that important. Where you’re buying the content is the main thing and Amazon has figured that out.
There is no firm release date for the Kindle for Tablets (and iPads) but we assume that it will ship close to the April 3 ship date. It will be very interesting to see how Apple responds to this. We will, of course, keep you updated.
