The Three Best Twitter Apps

By on August 16, 2010

So, you’re a twitter power user and you’re looking for the best twitter power tools.  Well, look no further.  We’re here to help you out.

DISCLAIMER:  The Twitter app market is constantly evolving.  This recommendation is as of 8/16/2010.

BEST DESKTOP TWITTER APP
This one is a tie.  We have two very strong contenders here and both have some unique strengths.  The two winners are Tweetdeck and HootSuite.  HootSuite is a web base Twitter client and what these folks have been able to cram into their app is amazing considering it all has to work in a web browser.  Tweetdeck is an Adobe Air app which means it’s cross platform.  (Some people hate Adobe Air as a platform but I have never had any real problems with it.)  Honestly, both of these apps are fairly equal in there general abilities.  The big difference is, of course, how you access the apps.  Hootsuite works in a browser so it’s always available with the same settings everywhere which is very nice.  On the other hand, Tweetdeck has a lot of fine tuned controls.  Both handle multiple accounts with ease.

BEST iPHONE TWITTER APP
Twitter recently released their very own native iPhone app and it is okay… just okay…exceedingly okay.  Tweetdeck for the iPhone, however, shines in this space.  Tweetdeck wins this one hands down.  It’s a makes great use of the smaller screen through columns.  It syncs your groups and lists from your desktop version so you don’t have to constantly recreate your groups.  For instance, I have a group called close friends that allows me to quickly scan the updates of everyone that’s really important to me while I’m on the go without having to hunt through the updates of everyone that I follow on Twitter.

BEST iPAD TWITTER APP
The real star in this category is Osfoora HD.  Sorry, Tweetdeck.  Don’t feel bad.  You can’t win them all.  Osfoora isn’t free but it’s totally worth the money ($3.99).  I’ve tried all the Twitter apps for the iPad and I mean all of them and this one wins hands down.  It makes great use of the extra real estate.  It looks gorgeous and you can do everything you need to do in Twitter right there in the app.  A lot of iPad Twitter apps don’t give you access to key features so you end up switching back and forth.  Trust me on this and Osfoora HD.  You won’t regret it.

BTW, don’t get sucked into buying Twittelator for the iPad.  The reviews make it seem like the greatest thing ever but it is truly one of the worst I tried and it’s expensive too.  Almost every free iPad Twitter app was better than that this loser.  Avoid it at all costs.
